July 2022 Business Spotlight
Jackie’s Snackette is Dixon Area Chamber of Commerce July Business of the Month. Owners, Dustin and Chelsey Doyle, are rolling through their second season of business as the summer heats up here in Dixon. While the Doyles are celebrating one year of restaurant ownership, the Snackette is in its 60th year of business!
Dustin is a former aviation maintenance technician for the Army National Guard, Dept of Defense and Dyncorp. Chelsey holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Drury University and worked there until she became a stay at home mom. They homeschool their two children, Rhett, age 7, and Lottie, age 5 and enjoy tending to their goats, chickens and garden.
Dustin and Chelsey were born and raised in Dixon and have fond memories of going to the Snackette as kids. In fact, Chelsey’s grandma, Jackie Hall, worked many years for Lewis Shepherd; the restaurant was known as Shepherd’s Drive In at that time. Encouraged by former owner Jamie Johnson, the Doyles honored Jackie by giving the Snackette an updated name: Jackie’s Snackette.
The Snackette, as most fondly call it, has had some amazing owners throughout the years; most of which still live in Dixon and have moved on to own other businesses and continue to greatly impact our community. Dustin was able to sit down recently with former owner, Ethel Dake, and listen to how she operated the day to day as a restaurant owner in a small town in the 60’s. She said “In 1965, a small ice cream cone was a nickel and hamburgers were 20 cents each.” Mrs. Dake bought the Snackette in 1965 and changed the name from the Snackette to Ethel’s Lunchbox. They discussed infamous juicy burger recipes, cleaning, and customers that they know by their Snackette order. She shared that “the key to a good business is the workers.” The Snackette has had the privilege of employing amazing people behind the counter and serving up the tastiest treats over the years. Today’s crew is some of the best.
Although, the prices might look different these days, the legacy of the Snackette remains; classic cheeseburgers made with quality ingredients and the BEST ice cream. They source as much as possible from local growers and farmers. A new Specialty Shake of the Week is released each Monday; from Cheesecake to Chocolate Chip Cookie to Cotton Candy. The bigger, the better.
Jackie’s Snackette strives to provide fun, tasty treats and a welcoming atmosphere that are the perfect blend of new and nostalgia. Chelsey said “We love that many of our customers are so deeply connected to our business. We are grateful to be a part of the Snackette legacy in our community and hope to continue for many years to come!”
Jackie’s Snackette is located at 711 West 5th Street, Dixon, MO. Summer Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11am-8pm; open late Friday and Saturday 11am-9pm. You can place your order by calling (573)759-7710.
